So here it is, the making of the Bear Warrior. Done in Photoshop with a heavy use of the natural media brushes. Read more about the development of this piece in my earlier post.

Well It's been a little while since the last full illustration, but what I've lacked in post, hopefully I've gained in quality. I really enjoyed working on this piece. The inspiration came after playing quite a few hours of Skyrim (if you can't tell), So while still hyped on the epicness that is that game, I decided to just tackle a full illustration. I mean come on, a bear clad north man, frost giants, blood and axes... what more could you ask for?

The first new thing that I attempted in the piece was photoshop's new natural media brushes (Which I believe was introduced with CS5). They've been lingering in the background over the past few months, but I never got around to trying them out. Until now. And as some of you know, I started with traditional mediums in school and jumped to digital circa 2007, about the time I first jumped into freelance work. Ever since then, I've been trying to pull back that traditional feel into my digital work. And these digital brushes have come the closest for me so far.

The second thing I did with this piece was posted the progress on wipnation.com. Which is a fantastic new social art site where you can post the image archeology as you're working on it and get critique from fellow artists right on the site.

Which leads me to my third item. Concept art. So as you can see in the archeology, I originally had the giants as orcs of sorts. (I was making it up as I went. Probably not the best idea, but oh well.) Anyway, I wanted to make the piece more "Nordic", so I decided on creating some Frost Giants for the piece instead. So I sketched this little guy in the good ol' sketchbook.

And lastly, I used more reference. Which is one thing I've been really noticing I need to improve on. After attending Illuxcon for the first time this year and hearing some great feedback from art directors and fellow artists, I was really hit hard with the need to focus on my reference. Not to be bound by it, but to really study it.

So there you have it. Possibly the longest post I've done in a while. But hey, it wasn't that bad right?

A couple years ago I started working with a writer from the Los Angeles area by the name of Erik Hendrix on a graphic novel. Long story short, trying to juggle time between investing in a graphic novel and trying to earn a living didn't work. So I had to back out of the project. Good news is he's found a new artist to take on the project with a planned release in 2012.

So, since they won't end up being used, I figured I'd share some of the pages here without dialogue, as to preserve Erik's story. And if the right person sees it, possibly get some paid comic work in the future.

He started a monthly forum discussion in February 2011, taking on local social and political representatives of the area in a friendly dialogue. I've had the honor of participating in creating the posters for the event, and we felt it would be a fun twist to depict him as a super hero out to save the 'burgh.

I meant to post this earlier, but I was in February's issue of Digital Artist Magazine issue 16. They're based out of the UK, but they have US, Australian, and Taiwan distribution as well. They featured a couple of my digital painting videos on the DVD that accompanies the magazine. Here's a glimpse of what the DVD menu looks like.

Well I haven't posted a lot of Illustration work lately, but here's one I really like. This was actually a side project I did for my boss, as he and his wife own a little farm here in Pittsburgh. It's a label for one of the goat cheeses they're going to be marketing.

In other news I've just been page by page working on the graphic novel. Other than that, just working hard at the day job and hanging with the wife.

I usually don't like to get too personal with the blog, but I'll post just a couple of the wedding photos from the wedding on August 7th of this year.

Art Dump- Illustrations from the day job.

Well, It's been quite a while since my last post. As some of you know I got an in-house job two and a half months ago, so that would explain the lack of posted work. So I figured I'd post a few of my favorite illustrations from the past couple months. The employer I work for is a screen printing company based here in Pittsburgh and I'm on board the art department. We mainly print our shirts all in-house with 5 machine presses running day and night. We design and print for most mass-market retailers, so that's why you'll see an eclectic use of styles, as we try and branch out to reach many designs and trends. I've removed most text and logos for the sole reason that I didn't care for them that much, and quite frankly some of the verbiage was just horrid. Regardless, I quite fancied the work themselves, as much to share them with you today.

In other news, the comic is coming along. And soon enough I'll be posting the cover and first 5 pages with some promotional stuff as well. I'm just waiting for the publisher (Arcana Studios) to post the pages on their site and announce it before I do so.

Also, good friends of mine have recently started their own film/video prodoction company handsomely entitled Death Perception Pictures. Check out their website at DeathPerceptionPictures.com, which should be up shortly with info on their finished and current projects and links to their podcast "the Deathcast". Which delves into discussions on film, tv, video games, and other entertainment news topics. Seriously, check it out.

well the lack has been because I just got a full-time job! For those of you who know me, you know I've been doing freelance work for almost three years now, well don't worry. I'll still be working on personal projects and the like. I've just received a design position at a t-shirt design and printing company here in Pittsburgh. And as I've been low on finances (as most freelancers are) for a while, I figured it was a great opportunity. I'll be keeping up with my posts and daily studies, I've just needed to re-adjust my schedule a bit.

yet again, I slacked at the blog thing for a couple months. But you know what, oh well. I haven't had much artwork to post as of late, the holidays came and went and now it's 2010. who knew.

Good news is I've been busy. I just put in the 2 weeks at my part-time side job and I'm going back to the full-time freelance. I tell you what, I was trying to keep up the pace with the projects, but it wasn't working. I've gotten backed up yet again and now I have a hand full of projects to finish in a couple weeks with the inevitable clients I'll annoy or upset by not being on time. which in turn makes me upset, because i hate delivering past project schedule. So let's see if I can prevent that. Anyway enough of my rants. Come the first of February I'll be working on trying to pump out 3 pages a week on the graphic novel I'm working on. hopefully to get released by October. More news on that later. I'm not quite sure what I'll be able to post, as far as project progress, but we'll see how it goes.

Man... It's good to be back

Well, shoot, I haven't posted on here in a little bit. I've been busy though so don't you doubt it. It's crazy how time flies by sometimes. SO let's see I'll try and give a recap since the last post.

Since it was the last post I figure I'll inform you on The digital painting I'm doing with Lazare und Liesel. I've been doing some fine tuning and details to try and make the best digital painting I have yet. And since I've learned the Camtasia studio, as some of you know, you will be able to watch the process of creation. I plan on putting up some tutorials at some point, narrating the process and the reasoning behind different developments through the painting and such. I've learned so much watching other artist work, and always believe in the idea of passing knowledge around. So we'll see if i can get that up and running in a few months.

More importantly though, since my last post, I got engaged! And for those of you who don't know her, her name is Caitlyn and come February we will have been dating for 6 years. So our plans are to get married in late summer of the tenth year of the new millenium.

In other exciting news, though I'm not sure how much i can talk about it yet. Erik Hendrix, the author of the comic book I've been working on, and I have found a publisher for the Evil Tree. And better yet they want to go straight to Graphic Novel instead of the 4 issue original plan. Which i think is great. So within the next year look forward to an intriguing 100 pages of artwork and dialogue. Also check out Carpet Bomb Comics of which the Evil Tree is apart of. Started by Erik Hendrix and associates as a venue and group for writers and artists alike to create and be. Feel free to check out the about page to hear it directly from the source.

In other news, one main reason why I haven't posted in a while is because I've been gone for two weeks in Great Britain. It was my Gran's 80th birthday, so American Rooke's traveled across land and sea to the great ilse that is England to a little city by the name of London. We stayed with my aunts and uncles while we were there in London and had a wonderful first Rooke family reunion in Herefordshire near the border of Wales with our Gran and all. After our 4 days in Berghill, the $ of us Rooke brothers took of on what I like to call the Wales tour of the Rooke brothers four. Perhaps I'll write a ballad of the adventures that took place. But in any case it was great fun and now I'm back in the good ol' Steel City that is Pittsburgh.

Well it's been fun to rant off again, and frankly if you were glad there was a lull in Denman ramblings or even the thought of the extinction of such things... well, then you can leave. And if you've gotten to this point and are reading these past two sentences well then, ha. I got you.
I don't know what I'm talking about. but oh well. And as some of you have heard before.
I guess I'll make like a fetus and head out.

the Red Right Hand

This piece I did for Conceptart.org for their Character of the Week(CHOW) thread. Based in a fictional WWII theme, this is a depiction of a Soviet super hero, the Red Right Hand. You can find this in the CHOW #173 thread. Done in photoshop.

I uploaded some High Definition videos showing the full process from sketch to final touches. I apologize for the necessity of commitment if interested as the first and last are about 10 min. each with part 2 being a full 25 min. I sped them up as fast as i could (1000 times their original speed) but regardless it's still a hefty investment. feel free to skip ahead or what not if so desired. Here are some of the reference photos I used. I used these references mainly for uniform styles and overall soviet tone. But it's also important to get anatomy references, I use a mirror for most projects when dealing with male anatomy, but I've used plenty of photo reference when needed as well. As long as you can get an understanding on how the muscles and other tissue fall over the bones of the body you're in the clear.

well I just finished up the front page over at InTheBloodTattoo.com so you should go check it out. I also just downloaded and briefly learned a screen recording program called Camtasia and uploaded the sketch to final illustration video i put together. I produced it in High-Definition so I recommend viewing it in that resolution. You'll get to see a little bit how i work and fumble with ideas on the screen. sometimes silly ideas come out, and you know what that's ok. This here is the process in developing the Satyr Hostler.

I still have some minor tweaks and such to do on all three, and I'll post them as soon as they're complete.
